Jesus died and rose again

As in any local investigation: there is the body, the place, and the witnesses talking about it. Non-Christian sources such as Tacitus record the execution of Christ under Pontius Pilate, confirming the basic historical fact of His death. The Gospels describe His burial in a known tomb and mention the rumor spread by Jewish authorities that the disciples had stolen the body—a claim that, unintentionally, admits three facts: Jesus died, was truly buried, and the tomb was later found empty. Archaeological and topographical studies support the plausibility of the traditional site of the Holy Sepulchre. These details show that the death and burial of Jesus are not vague legends but historically grounded data.

When people invent a story to persuade, they avoid details that weaken it. The Gospels do the opposite: they record Peter’s denial (the leader), Thomas’s disbelief, and the testimony of women—whose word had little value in that culture. It reads like an honest eyewitness report, not propaganda. Just as an accident report that admits one’s own fault sounds more believable, these candid details increase credibility. The most natural conclusion is that the authors were not fabricating heroes but describing what they truly saw and experienced.

Before, the disciples fled and returned to their old lives; afterwards, they faced imprisonment, torture, and death proclaiming Jesus alive. People do not risk everything for something they know is false. It is like hiding after a robbery, then suddenly standing in court to testify—one does that only if absolutely sure of the truth. Ancient sources and modern historians agree: at the very least, the disciples sincerely believed they had seen the Risen Jesus, and that conviction drove their fearless mission and martyrdom. Such radical change demands an equally extraordinary cause—real encounters with the living Christ.

In first-century Judaism, some denied any resurrection (the Sadducees), while others expected it only at the end of time. Suddenly, a group began proclaiming that the Messiah had already risen—here and now—as the firstfruits of the new creation. That was not a gradual evolution but a complete shift in worldview. It is as if a town expecting holidays only at year’s end suddenly met someone who said he had already lived them today—this changes everyone’s calendar. Historically, such a leap is best explained by an unexpected and concrete event, not by theological speculation.

For about three centuries, Christians faced various forms of persecution, yet the movement expanded. It is counterintuitive—like a business growing precisely when it is boycotted and attacked. Tradition summarized it: ‘the blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians.’ People who know their message is a fabrication do not choose that path. The Christian message also undermined the foundations of slavery: in Christ, there is no ‘slave or free,’ and the slave is to be received as a brother. In an empire built on servitude, such teaching was not convenient propaganda but a moral revolution. The Church’s endurance amid hostility reveals a conviction that Jesus was truly risen — not a known lie sold for advantage.
